THE TAKEAWAY

Map the question, evidence and next action for each buying task. Keep those tasks connected across stakeholders and touchpoints instead of producing a large sequence of generic assets.

The decision this guide helps you make

How should ABM content help a buying group make progress?

You will leave with: A buyer-task map connecting evidence assets to accepted next actions.

Start here: Map the buying task.

Design around the question the group faces

A buying group may need to define a problem, evaluate technical fit, justify investment and agree delivery responsibility. Different stakeholders can work on different questions at the same time. Content helps when it makes one of those tasks easier.

Replace an asset-first plan with a decision-first map. Identify the question, the person or group responsible, the evidence required and the next action. A useful technical checklist and a useful financial brief can support the same account while serving different tasks.

What customer-journey research contributes

Lemon and Verhoef’s 2016 Journal of Marketing article synthesises customer-experience research across time, touchpoints and organisational functions. It provides a conceptual foundation for studying how interactions connect, rather than a fixed sequence or guaranteed conversion rate.

Our ABM application is to inspect whether the buyer can carry a decision from one interaction to the next. The website, seller and implementation team should help resolve related questions rather than repeatedly reset the discussion.

The practical workflow

B2B journey design: give each buying task the evidence it needs. Workflow: Map the buying task; Identify required evidence; Assign the stakeholder and owner; Connect the next touchpoint; Review unresolved questions.

Create an evidence requirement for each task

Problem definition may need an operating diagnostic and a way to test assumptions. Technical evaluation may need architecture, compatibility and failure handling. Investment preparation may need costs, assumptions and a clear distinction between estimated and observed value. Delivery planning may need ownership, dependencies and acceptance criteria.

Mark unavailable evidence openly. If implementation time varies with an unknown integration, offer a scoping step instead of a fixed promise. The asset should help the buyer identify what remains to be learned.

Build a fictional buying-group map

For Northbridge Components, operations wants fewer manual order exceptions, IT needs to inspect data interfaces, finance wants to understand total implementation effort and procurement needs verifiable commitments. These questions form a connected evaluation, but they do not require identical messages.

Give operations an exception-mapping worksheet, IT a compatibility checklist and finance an assumption-based cost model. Keep the shared business objective and source record consistent. A champion can then explain what each asset resolves and which decision remains open.

Match depth and timing to the task

Personalisation research provides a reason to consider trust and the source of context. Use account evidence the buyer can recognise, and avoid presenting inferred private behaviour as fact. The task map should make messages more useful, rather than simply more intimate.

A stakeholder exploring the problem may need a short explanation. An evaluator comparing alternatives may need detailed evidence. A decision group may need a concise summary of agreed assumptions. Use observed questions and requests to update the map.

Measure whether an asset changes the next action

Track requested evidence, completed evaluation tasks, clarified assumptions and accepted follow-up. Downloads show activity; they do not establish that the asset resolved a buying question. Ask sellers to record how the content was used in the discussion.

Review recurring gaps. If technical evaluators repeatedly ask for the same missing detail, improve that asset. If finance cannot distinguish assumptions from observed outcomes, revise the business case. Build the next piece because a decision needs it, rather than because the calendar requires more content.

Your next-action checklist

  • Problem definition: Offer an operating worksheet. Check the limitation: diagnosis may be incomplete.
  • Technical evaluation: Provide a validation checklist. Check the limitation: claims need verifiable evidence.
  • Investment preparation: Show assumptions and ranges. Check the limitation: estimates can be mistaken for results.
  • Delivery planning: Assign owners and acceptance. Check the limitation: dependencies may remain open.

Use the comparison to choose a bounded next step. Record the evidence, the responsible owner, and the review decision before extending the play to additional accounts.

How to use the evidence

Read each reference against the claim it supports. Platform documentation describes capabilities; public cases report a publisher’s experience; research findings apply to the studied task and population. The workflow in this guide is an operating proposal to evaluate in your own account context.

Questions this guide answers

How should ABM content help a buying group make progress?

Map the question, evidence and next action for each buying task. Keep those tasks connected across stakeholders and touchpoints instead of producing a large sequence of generic assets.

What should I do first?

Map the buying task. Record the input evidence and the acceptance criteria before continuing. Use the decision worksheet to document the owner, review date and next action.
