THE TAKEAWAY
Connect evidence to an owner’s next decision. A useful agent system should improve a specific account action and make its reasoning inspectable.
The decision this guide helps you make
Which operating mechanisms in McKinsey’s published B2B cases are worth testing in an account programme?
You will leave with: A decision worksheet comparing opportunity intelligence, seller support, pipeline reporting, with evidence and an accountable next step.
Start here: Define the account decision.

These are cases published by McKinsey about anonymised organisations, not examples of McKinsey’s own marketing campaigns. Outsell did not participate in the deployments. We analyse the reported mechanisms and propose an enterprise account test; we cannot independently reproduce the client results. Named authors and publication dates make the material attributable, while anonymisation limits account-level verification.
What the 2025 source reports
McKinsey’s March 2025 article describes an industrial-materials distributor combining internal and external data with public construction-permit information, opportunity prioritisation, and personalised outreach. It reports more than $1 billion in new opportunities, a 10% pipeline increase, and more than doubled click-through rates in the first fiscal year. A separate equipment-manufacturer case connects a cleaned aftermarket database, maintenance-related recommendations, CRM lead lists, and email response routing; reported pipeline growth exceeded 20% of total revenue. These describe pipeline measures, not booked-revenue guarantees.

The practical workflow
- Define the account decision
- Attach evidence and unknowns
- Build the seller handoff
- Collect acceptance and corrections
- Evaluate the bounded cohort
Compare the approaches
| Approach | Useful when | Limitation | Next action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Opportunity intelligence | An account has an evidenced reason to investigate | A public trigger is not a purchase commitment | Record relevance, unknowns, and owner |
| Seller support | The owner needs context for a complex conversation | Preparation efficiency is not campaign ROI | Review the brief and claim evidence |
| Pipeline reporting | The play influences recorded opportunities | Pipeline is not booked revenue or proof of causality | Agree baseline and metric definitions |
What the 2026 source adds
McKinsey’s July 2026 report describes an anonymised enterprise-technology company providing a workflow-integrated AI sales adviser to more than 8,000 sellers. It reports onboarding time falling from approximately three months to six weeks. The case concerns seller enablement; it does not establish the effect of an account marketing campaign or prove that every organisation can reproduce the result.

Outsell analysis: define the decision before the data pipeline
Choose a commercial question such as which existing accounts have a credible reason to assess an additional service. Establish eligible account types, relationship exclusions, and the owner who will act on the recommendation. An agent then has a bounded task: connect permitted evidence to that question, record uncertainty, and return an action proposal.
For an infrastructure provider, for example, a public expansion announcement might justify research into operating requirements. It does not prove that the organisation will buy a particular product. The account brief should show the announcement, source date, proposed relevance, missing technical context, and an appropriate discovery question. This fictional translation is Outsell’s analysis, not another McKinsey case.
Outsell analysis: the handoff is the product
An intelligence engine can rank an account while leaving a seller without a useful opening. Test the handoff itself: can the owner explain the evidence, identify the buyer question, and select a next step? A recommendation should include the relevant asset, account history, technical claim boundaries, and conditions that would invalidate it.
Separate an observation from a model-generated interpretation. Keep source references accessible. Give the receiving owner a way to reject a suggestion and explain why. That feedback should change the account hypothesis or future prioritisation rules, rather than simply lower an engagement score. A dependable workflow may use ordinary rules for routing and AI for synthesis; the task determines the technology.
Design a pilot that can answer a real question
Select a manageable account cohort with responsible sales owners. Record the starting opportunities and the current research effort. Test whether the proposed briefs reduce rework, improve message relevance, and lead to accepted next actions. Keep activity, pipeline movement, and revenue in separate reporting layers.
A review should include rejected recommendations, unsupported claims, outdated evidence, and missing stakeholder coverage. Compare the cost of producing and reviewing an account play with the usefulness reported by its recipient. Decide in advance what would justify continuing, revising, or stopping the system. The first useful outcome may be a reliable research-to-handoff process, even when a long sales cycle prevents a credible revenue conclusion.
Evidence we would require before projecting impact
Request the cohort definition, opportunity baseline, reporting period, metric calculation, and treatment of existing pipeline. Understand how an opportunity was valued and what qualified it for inclusion. Report absolute values and rates in context; a pipeline estimate is not a realised sale.
The published cases support examining an operating mechanism. They do not remove the need for local validation, technical review, seller adoption, and an appropriate comparison. Our recommended worksheet makes those decisions explicit. Do not present McKinsey’s reported client outcomes as Outsell performance, or use them as a contractual promise.
Your next-action checklist
- Opportunity intelligence: Record relevance, unknowns, and owner. Check the limitation: a public trigger is not a purchase commitment.
- Seller support: Review the brief and claim evidence. Check the limitation: preparation efficiency is not campaign ROI.
- Pipeline reporting: Agree baseline and metric definitions. Check the limitation: pipeline is not booked revenue or proof of causality.
Use the comparison to choose a bounded next step. Record the evidence, the responsible owner, and the review decision before extending the play to additional accounts.
How to use the evidence
Read each reference against the claim it supports. Platform documentation describes capabilities; public cases report a publisher’s experience; research findings apply to the studied task and population. The workflow in this guide is an operating proposal to evaluate in your own account context.

Questions this guide answers
Which operating mechanisms in McKinsey’s published B2B cases are worth testing in an account programme?
Connect evidence to an owner’s next decision. A useful agent system should improve a specific account action and make its reasoning inspectable.
What should I do first?
Define the account decision. Record the input evidence and the acceptance criteria before continuing. Use the decision worksheet to document the owner, review date and next action.
